Encircled: Examining the Naive and Persistent Script of Western Betrothal
Rendered - Bound Paper, Ink
11” x 7”, 30 pg.
1 of 14 Publications in the Archaeology of Standards Series, organized by Maite Borjabad López-Pastor
A small publication dedicated to unearthing the truths behind the industry surround the script of the “Western” betrothal. The timeline is traced back prior to the common era, examining texts normally treated as myth, all the way to the present, where marketing strategies and advertising is critically examined for face value. All throughout, the story intertwines multiple factors: the rings themselves, and the gemstones commonly set within them.
This tale has many characters, all with varying ties to the industry surrounding betrothal over the past two-and-a-half thousand years. We see superpowers of wealth and resources vie for influence, and strange celebrated figures advertise for these powers, sometimes unwittingly. We see linguistic precursors to the words we still use today show up in strange places. We see a fantastic and hardly believable tale of epic proportions, than can only be briefly glanced at in the span of thirty-odd pages.
